Drawn - insecurities 04

I'm on a bit of a downer about my work at the moment - I'm struggling to find the motivation to do anything at all. It doesn't help that the internet seems to be awash with creative people producing amazing work, who always seem to be inspired and driven. I'm sure it's not the case for most of these artists - they probably struggle just as much as I do to feel like they are good enough, or that what they are doing is somehow 'worthwhile', and I am sure they wonder, just like I do, whether other people have noticed how rubbish they are sometimes.

  1. I feel like this about my academic work a lot. There are people the same age who have gone much further. Its hard not to play the "compare game".

There will always be people who are better. Sometimes the gap widens as you get older as well-through no fault of anybodies, its just the normal distribution. I am trying at the moment not to feel bad about this, but instead to take inspiration from others and think about why their research is successful, what I can do to make mine better and just accepting that all I can do is my best and see what happens.

Have confidence in just being you because I think you are awesome.

  2. You ARE awesome. And thou the market (and the world) is flooded with talented illustrators remember that your artistic voice is unique and different and stands on its own. You have a good eye and a great sense of humor so see yourself as privileged.
Sadly I feel the same about my work. What I miserable and insecure profession we’ve got:)

  3. Awwww, you guys...

Kat - I think it must be difficult in most professions to feel like you're good enough. I know you sometimes find it hard to feel like you're getting anywhere, or that you're coming up with good ideas for research, but I also know how hard you work and how much you care about it, so I think it's amazing, what you do. I certainly couldn't do it :-)

Masha - so nice to hear from you! I'm kind of glad you share the feelings of insecurity, but at the same time, having seen your lovely work, I think you should be proud of yourself too. These feelings probably make us work harder and strive to be better artists, so they are somehow good for us. We just need to keep making sure that we don't let them get us down too often.
